Biography

Prior to assuming the deanship of the Keck School of Medicine of USC in November 2007, Carmen A. Puliafito, MD, MBA, served as director of the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute and chair of the Department of Ophthalmology of the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. Before joining Bascom Palmer, he was the founding director of the New England Eye Center (NEEC) and chair of the Department of Ophthalmology at Tufts University from 1991 to 2001.

Dr. Puliafito started his career at Harvard’s Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, where he was founder of the Laser Research Laboratory, director of the Morse Laser Center, a member of the Retina Service, and Associate Professor of Ophthalmology.

Dr. Puliafito is an innovator and has made many groundbreaking contributions to the field of vision research. He was the first surgeon to successfully perform experimental retinal photocoagulation with the semiconductor diode laser and first to perform digital indocyanine green angiography (ICG). He pioneered basic science research in excimer laser photoablation and optical breakdown and photodisruption. In addition, he laid some of the foundations for LASIK with early work on excimer lasers, publishing one of the first papers in the literature on ablation of the cornea. For his work on OCT, Dr. Puliafito was awarded (along with James Fujimoto and Eric Swanson) the 2002 Rank Prize — the world’s most prestigious award in optoelectronics. He was also the recipient of the 2012 Champalimaud Vision Award.

Research Interests:

Dr. Puliafito’s research specializes in the detection of disease and treatment of the retina. As a co-inventor of optical coherence tomography (OCT), this imaging technique revolutionized the practice of ophthalmology by dramatically improving the ability of clinicians to diagnose and treat such blinding diseases as macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy. OCT was also used to develop a novel and widely accepted approach for the detection and management of glaucoma and its progression. Dr. Puliafito continues to make advancements in OCT technology.
