Mark S. Humayun Receives the National Medal of Technology and Innovation

Congratulations to Mark S. Humayun, MD, PhD, co-director of the USC Roski Eye Institute and director of the USC Institute for Biomedical Therapeutics, for receiving the National Medal of Technology and Innovation, the nation’s highest award for technology achievement. Bestowed by President Barack Obama, the award recognizes Humayun for his lifelong dedication to bridging medical science and engineering to restore sight. He holds more than 100 issued patents and patent applications, most in the area of bioimplants for ophthalmology, and is a member of the U.S. National Academy of Medicine and the National Academy of Engineering. Humayun’s Argus II is the only FDA- approved retinal prosthesis that allows people with certain blinding diseases to regain sight.
