Research Interests:

Carlos Lastra Gonzalez, MD’s research focuses on the assessment of the prevalence and incidence of diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, cataract, macular degeneration, visual impairment and other ocular diseases among specific ethnic groups. Epidemiological studies include Los Angeles Latino Eye Study (LALES), Multi-Ethnic Pediatric Eye Disease Study (MEPEDS), Chinese, American Eye Study (CHES), and African American Eye Disease Study (AFEDS).

Biography:

Dr. Lastra Gonzalez received his MD from the Colombian School of Medicine in 2005 followed by a year of mandatory social service in a vastly underserved area in the outskirts of Bogota. Soon after finishing his mandatory social service year, he joined the Ophthalmology Residency program at the National University of Colombia, probably the most competitive Ophthalmology Programs in Colombia. After graduating as an Ophthalmologist, he joined the staff of the Instituto de Cornea and the Clinica de Ojos, there he worked as a general ophthalmologist, attending clinic, and performing ophthalmologic surgeries such as cataract, pterygium, and refractive among others. In 2005, he came to USC to work with Dr. Varma as Clinical Instructor of Research in a large clinical research project, to assess the prevalence and incidence of major eye diseases and visual impairment.
