Biography and Education


Jonathan C. Song, MD, MBA, received his BS in biology from the California Institute of Technology and his MD from the University of California, San Francisco. He completed an internship at UCLA Medical Center and his ophthalmology residency at the University of Southern California’s Department of Ophthalmology. Dr. Song then completed dual fellowship training in Pediatric Ophthalmology at the Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA) and in Cornea and Refractive Surgery at the USC Department of Ophthalmology.

Dr. Song returns to The USC Roski Eye Institute/Department of Ophthalmology as associate professor of clinical ophthalmology and director of the Cornea Service from Wilmer Eye Institute at Johns Hopkins. His specialty is cornea, external diseases, and refractive surgery. He also specializes in Pediatric Ophthalmology, with special interest in pediatric cataracts, glaucoma, and corneal/refractive disorders in children. Dr. Song is one of the few surgeons worldwide who performs both high volume pediatric corneal transplantation and pediatric laser vision correction.

Research Interests:

Dr. Song focuses on the development of new techniques in corneal transplantation to help regain central corneal clarity in children who otherwise would have minimal vision. Dr. Song is also the investigator in a clinical trial of OCT (optical coherence tomography)-guided laser assisted anterior lamellar keratoplasty in children. Jonathan Song, MD, is leading a surgical training program for residents, which includes the use of virtual reality cataract simulators. He is also conducting a study on the evaluation of cataract surgery, comparing standard surgical techniques versus advanced technologies such as femtosecond assisted laser surgery.
